  • One of the interesting aspects of Facebook is it allows Libraries to create Page, which people before fans of. Or you can create a Group, which people join. These two aspects work differently, Pages allow you to send out an update to fans while Groups allow you to post events in your area.

I've been playing with both for my library to see what gets more interaction from patrons, but they are both fairly new so I can't claim one is better than the other at this point.
  • The "Events" application in Facebook would seem to be extremely useful for a Library or any other business/organization. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Science Dept here at JCCC to create an account for just such a reason. We have lots of events that go largely unnoticed because of the lack of publicity on media that students are likely to consume.
  • @Doug I've played with the Events feature, it's pretty intensive on the data entry so it really isn't worth the effort for most events, it's just too much labor. I put in the "major" events and leave it at that. Plus with the Networks aspect getting pretty much done away with they only show up to people who are fans, before they showed up in the wider network.
  • I prefer Facebook over MySpace any day of the week.. but I do agree that some of the Web 2.0 sites are not well developed for a library setting.
